I wanted to create this blog post on helpful tips on what you will need to know ahead of time about getting a marriage license in Colorado!
Get Legally Married in Colorado
First things first, getting married in Colorado is pretty laid back. My husband and I eloped, and got married in the state of Colorado; it was simple and stress free for us! To begin, You will want to check and be sure of which county in Colorado you are getting married at. Then, you will need to visit the county clerk office where you’ll be getting married and apply for marriage certification at your county clerk’s office. Some offices may allow you to complete everything online, and some may require in-person visits.
Next, you will need to fill out an application and pay a fee. The fee varies by county, but it is typically anywhere around $30.00-$50.00. After submitting your marriage certification application, you just now have to wait for the license to be issued! In Colorado, there is a mandatory one-day waiting period before you can use the license. After that, the license is valid for 35 days. I do caution to make sure to not obtain your Colorado marriage license too early! The marriage license has to be signed within 35 days of obtaining it. If you were to receive your license too early, this means that it wouldn’t be valid anymore by the time your elopement or wedding day arrives.
Do I need a witness to get married in colorado?
Further, a question I often get asked a lot is “Do I need a witness to get married in Colorado?”, and the answer is, nope! Witnesses are not required in the state of Colorado. Colorado considers it to be legal for just you and your significant other to sign the license as your own witness. In fact, this is exactly what my husband and I did when we got married in Colorado! However, you do still have the option to have a witness at your wedding or elopement, and have your witness sign the lines available on your marriage license!
Do you have a furry friend you love dearly? Well guess what? Your dog can serve as your witness for your wedding in Colorado! How fun is that!? Many couples have chosen to have their dog as their witness to celebrate the occasion with them! All you need to do, is bring an ink pad so that your dog can sign with his or her paw print on your Colorado marriage certificate!
